Hawaii (in English, Hawaii, in Hawaiian, Hawai'i) a statement of the United States. Its territory is composed of a Polynesian archipelago of the same name in the north Pacific Ocean. Were formerly known as the Sandwich Islands. Hawaii is the only U.S. state that is not on the American continent.
All Hawaiian Islands were formed by the action of volcanoes that arose from the seabed, from a source of magma in geology is called hot spot. This theory holds that the tectonic plate under the Pacific Ocean moves in a north-westerly direction, so that the hot spot remains stationary, slowly creating new volcanoes. For this reason, only the volcanoes in the southern half of the Big Island remain active today.

The oldest islands are dormant volcanoes, the newest, still active volcanoes. At the top of one of these volcanoes, Mauna Kea is one of the largest telescopes in the world. The island of Hawaii has five volcanoes, one of which is the most active in the world, the Kilauea.
The archipelago of Hawaii is composed of eighteen islands and atolls that stretch over 2,400 km. Of all of them are considered "main islands" and eight of them located in the extreme southeast of the archipelago. This includes name, in order from northwest to southeast,: Niihau (Niihau), Kauai (Kauai), Oahu (Oahu), Molokai (Molokai), Lanai (Lanai), Kahoolawe (Kahoolawe), Maui (Maui) and Island of Hawaii. The latter is by far the largest of which is often called the "Big Island". The use of this alternative name is often responds to the need to avoid ambiguity between "Hawaii" referring to the entire state (all islands) compared to that island in particular.
Arguably, the climate of Hawaii is atypical for a tropical zone, which is usually considered more subtropical appearances by latitude, due to the action exerted by the moderator ocean that surrounds it. Temperatures and humidity tend to be less extreme, with maximum temperatures in summer rarely touching the 33 ° C and in winter (in slightly elevated areas) do not normally fall beyond the 18 º C. Precipitation as snow, although not usually associated with tropical climate, affecting very large areas such as Mauna Kea and Mauna Loa on the Big Island in some winter months.
